You will learn to identify important considerations when selecting the right stabilizer for your project. You’ll learn how stabilizers are classified, and how easy it is to crack the code. Once you understand these two important strategies, you will have more success in selecting the best stabilizers. In this class you will learn that stabilizers aren’t just for machine embroidery. One day

Friday, January 22nd 2021

From 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM

Kit Fee $80.00

Class Type: Domestic Machine Work

Skill Level: Intermediate

Description: Let’s make my new Diamond Diva together! “Catherine” is the second pattern in my freezer-paper pieced Diamond Divas series, a round brilliant cut solitaire diamond pattern that is 48” in diameter. When finished with a border, the finished quilt is 5-feet square. “Catherine” is available in two colorways: White Diamond and Champagne Diamond. The exciting feature of this pattern is that you can customize “Catherine” to include your own color palette. Is there a wedding or anniversary in your future? You can incorporate the couple’s celebration colors into a wonderful quilt! This isn’t paper piecing! The question I get asked most frequently is, “Is this foundation paper piecing?” No! This is traditional piecing using freezer-paper facets as your templates. Freezer paper is the amazing product used by all kinds of crafters that adheres to fabric yet can be removed without leaving a residue. You don’t sew to a paper foundation, so you don’t have to claw bits of paper out of the back of your quilt. Can I do this? The second most-frequently asked question is, “Is it difficult?” Again, the answer is No! If you can put 2 pieces of fabric together with a ¼-inch seam allowance, you can make this quilt. Seriously. Here’s why: • Precision is not a priority with my patterns. You don’t have to worry about perfectly matched seams in my designs! Why? Because light doesn’t follow quilters’ rules. Gems couldn’t care less about the Quilt Police! • There are two identical sets of patterns in every package: one to cut up (the freezer paper), and one to pin to your quilt studio wall that will serve as your “treasure map”, helping you put the pieces back together. • I’ve created a Piece Plan that is available on my website if you like a little more direction. This document tells you exactly which pieces to put together into units and sections. You can do this. Better yet, let’s do this together at Road@Home!

I created the Octagon Rose pattern after being inspired by this lovely octagonal crystal. This is not foundation paper-piecing! We won’t sew to paper foundations so there’s no paper to tear out of the back of your quilt top. This is traditional piecing that uses freezer paper as your templates. If you can sew two pieces of fabric together with a 1/4-inch seam allowance, you can do this! In this 3-hour live, online class, students will learn…. • Multiple ways to manipulate value contrast across colors to create a sparkling gem • How certain types of fabrics (i.e. solids, prints, ombres, hand-dyes, or hand-painted fabric) impact the flow of light and color across a gem • How to read the codes printed on each facet to understand how to piece their gem • How to customize their gem into additional facets if desired • No-pressure piecing techniques that result in a lovely, 14” square gem block The pattern is divided into 7” x 7” quadrants, each of which can be downloaded as a PDF document and printed onto sheets of freezer paper. Students may purchase commercially available freezer paper sheets from suppliers like C&T Publishing or they may purchase a roll of freezer paper from their local grocery store and cut 8.5” x 11” sheets to run through their home printer. (Please note that neither waxed paper nor parchment paper is appropriate for this class. Freezer paper allows you to draw or print a pattern on one side. On the other side, freezer paper has a plastic substance on the back which allows the paper template to adhere to fabric when you to press it with a hot iron without leaving a residue.) At the end of our time together, students will have created a 14” square gem block that can be used in many different ways. Examples will be provided.

Prior to the mass production of the sewing machine and the emergence of long arm quilting machines, quilts were made by using paper templates and scraps of fabric. First, individual pieces were made, then those pieces were assembled into larger quilt blocks. Finally, the individual blocks were sewn together by hand to create the final quilt. Lucky for us, traditional sewists and quilters have kept this elegantly simply and portable quilting technique alive so we can share it with you.
